Inital Questions

Can coloured glass help improve LED light?

To answer this question, we held shards of coloured glass in front of both LED and incandescent bulbs. This allowed us to measure the difference in the remaining light. Tests showed that certain glass colours, combined with specific LEDs, provide exceptionally good colour rendering — skin tones remain natural rather than washed out.

What interesting shape emits light all around, but is not round?
After sketching many uninspiring shapes, the question led me to a cube-derived form. The cube is one of the five Platonic solids. These shapes share the property that all their vertices lie on the surface of a sphere.

Brief

On Curaçao, the northeast trade wind blows almost all year round. This wind typically has a force of 3 to 4 and comes directly from the east about sixty percent of the time. Thanks to this constant breeze, the island remains pleasant and comfortable despite the heat.

By allowing this wind to flow through the house, the need for air conditioning is greatly reduced. This accelerates acclimatization and lowers heat load, which in turn further decreases the demand for cooling. The result is not only a comfortable living environment but also a drastic reduction in energy consumption—and with it, the environmental impact. However, building in this way is not common practice.

The task was to design a residence consisting of a main house, a guest house, and a garage, making optimal use of the northeast trade wind. At the same time, it had to be possible to fully close off the west side during strong winds to keep the interior calm. This way, the entire house doesn’t need to be shut, and even the newspapers can stay on the table.

The roof shape improves natural airflow, and placing shutters just below the ridges allows warm air to be exhausted. In addition, the shutters enable precise control of the amount of wind entering the house, keeping ventilation and indoor comfort balanced.

The required functions and room dimensions made it impossible to align all spaces in a single row on this plot. To maintain optimal airflow through the bedrooms and over the beds, shutters were integrated into the partition walls at bed height.

The west façade, which receives the strongest heat from the afternoon sun, is finished with a special white reflective paint. The roof is also well insulated to preserve indoor comfort.
